My first job took me across the country to a fast-growing town with equally fast-growing house prices. I began a varied career with a company known for lifelong employment, where I noticed several families of second and third-generation employees—a red flag for me.
The 90s brought market shifts, redundancies, and the realisation that the “job for life” was a myth. Inspired by an IT Contractor I happened to suddenly work alongside, I transitioned to become a freelance IT Contractor in Software Testing just after the second wave of redundancies caught me and left with the choice to hand control of my future to a new Employer or to take control of it myself.
This shift also offered freedom from corporate politics and the ability to choose when, where, and for whom I worked.
IT Contracting provided an enjoyable and challenging career, learning and navigating changing markets, regulation and different clients over 20+ years.
Today, alongside existing contracts I enjoy passing on that knowledge to help other IT employees move away from feeling trapped or restricted towards the freedom and flexibility of IT Contracting where they can build a business that aligns and assists with their Personal Lifestyle Goals.
